This might be completely inappropriate to blog about, but I just have to know. If it's inappropriate just let me know in the comments. I just got a call, it said "Private Caller" so I figured it was not a telemarketer (caller id is brand new to me). It was this town's police association asking me to be a hero and support the men and women in our police force with a monetary donation.
I've heard that the money given to the police associations isn't really used for what they say (for example equipment or programs), that it is actually used for the police's entertainment. Is that true? I feel so guilty saying I can't help at this time. What's the truth?

Not a clue, but I always just tell them I can't help at this time. Don't let them make you feel guilty. If I gave to everyone who calls, we'd be bankrupt!
I especially hate it when I get the calls to send poor kids to the movies or circus. There's always that tone of, "You don't want to help children?!" if I say no. But we can't give to everyone, and we prefer our money to go to Biblically-minded organizations anyway.
For the love of Pete, please tell Andrea NOT to give to these things. We have several charities we give to on a regular basis outside of chuch and these things are a scam.
Eric
you have the sweetest spirit!! it is hard to say no, and then when you do and they make you feel guilty: ah, so you don't care about cancer research..
once we had a rainsoft guy that came to our house and went balistic. he concluded after hours of deliberation that we cared little for our children and their lives would be forever scarred by not purchasing his product. he even offered to pray with us. mental.
i don't know where the money for the police department goes, i have heard similar things as you, but i say go with your gut and give to things that you know benefits someone directly not a guilt led phone call!
congrats on your new house!!
Ann, all civil servants have government funded programs to protect and assist them. Believe me, if you want to be assured of lifelong protection, become a government employee. Do not give to any organization over the phone. If you feel "guilty" about saying no, tell them that your family does not make committments to organizations by way of telephone conversations, but if they would like to send you literature, you will review it and then decide. Most of these people do not have literature and will not have anything to send....and to me, that is an answer in itself. Never make a monetary committment over the phone unless you are absolutely sure of the organization and who is calling.

Eric,,,,,,,who is Pete????
lol - yb
Eric loves Pete?
I'm confused.
Anyway, here's my two cents on this.... we get those calls...and they aren't from the "local" police department. They don't call you.
Tell him to go away. (in a nice way of course):)
I usually just say that while it sounds worthwhile, we have an allotted amount for charitable donations, and this is not in our budget. And I came over because of your "Shake your boobies" comment and could not find an appropriately silly post on which to hang the phrase. So I put it on the police charity post!
Unfortunatley I have heard that a large percentage of these types of "fund raising" goes to the fund raiser...not necessarily the organization they're workign for. I don't give to them, and sometimes wonder if they're even affiliated with them. DON'T give them your credit card number. Whenever I see "private" on caller ID I assume it IS a telemarketer.
